The arrival of programmable electronic thermostats was a first step toward a better approach to heating and cooling but a lot more could be done if these devices could communicate (between them or with a master module). Setpoints can be adjusted according to your presence or absence by simply linking them to the alarm system; once the system is armed the thermostat sets itself to the "away" setpoint. This system could easily be linked to the Internet to allow people to log in and adjust the levels from work before they leave for home. It is also possible to limit the peak demand by rotating the heating cycle among many thermostats.
